Error Etica - The Axiom of Coherent States I EP

Victor Martinez is a Spanish artist and the mind behind Psychoskunk Recordings, and this year he seems intent on pushing the sounds of his new project, Error Etica. The Axiom of Coherent States—the full-length album released a few months ago on Psychoskunk—is scheduled to be the subject of a series of remixes this year. The first in that series puts an Error Etica original together with reworks from Paul Boex, Obtane and Agony Forces.

The original track, "The Saints Of Luxury," is an appropriate introduction to the sound Error Etica pushes throughout the album, and its sticky psychedelia rises—just barely—above the din of similarly bleak contemporary techno. With Obtane on board to remix "Monochrome," however, there's too much emphasis on one style. The Zooloft label boss's own take on abstract techno works for me because his droning basslines and hi-hat rushes have room to expand, contract and go off on beatless tangents. At a relatively short six minutes in length, this remix is one of Obtane's weaker moments: it's just too static.

Meanwhile, Boex's take on "The Saints Of Luxury" is smoothed out and layered with some warm atmospheric vibes, and it comes across as more focused than the original. The Agony Forces remix of "Penicilin," with its dramatic pauses and raw, dried-out trebles, is just as assertive and even more dynamic. Hard to pick a favorite of the two, but the Boex and AF versions easily form the better half of the record.--
